Update from KCC on Grovewood Drive South Road Closure    June 19, 2019

We have received the following update from KCC ...

“Please find below some additional information regarding the proposed closure of Grovewood Drive South.

This closure is to enable the safe construction of the new roundabout approved for the STEM School. These works are being carried out and managed by the school’s developer.

The duration of the works is 9 weeks, starting 1st July to the end of August. Please accept my apologies for the incorrect duration sent out with the closures initial notification.

Due to the existing road width available the construction will require various stages of reduced lane width traffic management or 2-way traffic lights on New Cut Road along with the closure of Grovewood Drive South. The closure being necessary to avoid the need for additional TM that would result in queuing traffic extending back to the A20/New Cut Road junction, thus causing major disruption on the A20 which would quickly escalate to other parts of the strategic road network around Maidstone. The diversion for the closure is via Provender Way and Grovewood Drive North. Also during this time the multiple utility company connection works for the new school will be carried out.

The STEM school is due to open Sept 2020 and therefore these works need to be completed before then. Works of this nature at a busy location will always have an adverse effect to traffic but to minimise the disruption caused they were coordinated to take place July/August spanning this year’s school summer break. This would then utilise the reduced traffic volumes during that period and avoid clashing with the proposed A249 Bearsted Road major highway improvement scheme that is due to take place throughout 2020. The proximity of St John’s Primary school on Provender Way was also taken into account when making this decision but as the schemes duration is 9 weeks it could not be completed fully within the school holiday. The developer has advised that they have been in communication with St John’s school about the scheme and its timing. I can also confirm that the developer has been requested to erect advance warning of works signs on site and carry out a letter drop to the residents of Grove Green. This will provide a contact should they have any queries and advice that additional time should be allowed for any journeys during this period.

I understand the frustrations that works of this nature can cause and be assured that we strive to ensure that the works for new development are undertaken to reduce as far as possible any congestion on our road network. We find ourselves in unfortunate circumstances such as this with the need of the developer to carryout essential works on the highway and the need of the travelling public utilising our road network. Please be assured that we will be monitoring congestion during the schemes construction and do all we can to mitigate the impacts of these works”.
